The funds raised this year will support the creation of a new Centre for Precision Psychiatry. There has been very limited improvement in outcomes for patients with psychiatric disorders in recent decades because mental illness is still diagnosed and treated based largely on symptomatology (i.e. observed behavior), not biology. Our Mental Health Mission has established a new research centre to collect broad and consistent biological data on all consenting adult mental health patients at the MGH, over a 10-year period, so that in the future, doctors can make diagnoses based on objective biological features. By working with the AI community in Montreal, this new centre has the potential to usher in a new era of precision psychiatry for the benefit of women suffering from mental illnesses and their families.
